Wood Cell Walls: Moisture Stress Unveiled!
This research focuses on the impact of moisture fluctuations on stress distribution within the wood cell wall, considering periodically graded microstructures. Given wood's hygroscopic nature, moisture absorption and desorption lead to swelling and shrinkage, generating internal mechanical stresses. These stresses are influenced by the hierarchical and anisotropic structure of the cell wall, particularly the distribution of microfibrils in the S2 layer of secondary walls.
